Growing Green - in Greenisland

The project is supported the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Under specialist guidance from horticulture tutor and artist, Debbie Fitzsimmons, they are busy working to renovate the space behind the train station into a thriving area for all the locals to use and enjoy.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Cllr Lindsay Millar welcomed the project.

She said: “Community growing initiatives can be instrumental in bringing people together and I am delighted to see this neglected space being brought back to life in Greenisland. I would urge all the locals to come together to support this exciting project.

“The group would like to pass on their thanks to the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council staff from Sullatober Household Recycling Centre who have donated pieces that are now being re-used, including tables for transplanting and wood for making raised beds.

“Council are committed to helping build stronger, safer communities here in Mid and East Antrim and projects like this are a fantastic way to help achieve this.”

Alderman Maureen Morrow, Chairperson of the MEA Peace IV Partnership said, “It is great to see the exciting range of initiatives Council are delivering across the borough thanks to PEACE IV funding. This garden is a great idea and we look forward to seeing the finished product.”

The group have been up and running just a few weeks and have already made great strides in transforming this lovely space known locally as ‘The Well’ into an environmentally friendly green space.

Using recycled wood items and arts, this friendly group are hoping the space will create a welcoming area for all to enjoy.
