Guild members learn about Belfast history

After the September minutes were read and signed, Treasurer Molly Wilson gave her report.

On completion of the monthly business, the Chairman welcomed guest speaker Isobel Anderson who shared the story of how Harland and Wolff became the largest shipbuilder in the world and built the Titanic. Her talk was accompanied by slides of the offices where the ship was designed and the exterior and interior of the grand cruise liner, which had the opulence of a five star hotel.

Members were then shown slides depicting many of Belfast’s most historic landmarks such as the City Hall, Ulster Museum and Queen’s University.

Anna Adams thanked Isobel for coming along to talk the Guild.

The Chairman closed the meeting and reminded members that their next get-together will be a lunch at Rockmount Golf Club on November 21 at 1pm.

Meanwhile, Fortwilliam Guild member June Cosgrove was a guest at the recent Praxis Care Service User Awards held at the Dunadry Hotel.

Praxis provides care in the community for people with learning disabilities, mental health issues, brain injuries and dementia.

The charity, which employs 1,200 people, provides work placements for those who can benefit in a range of settings including cafes and garden centres, helping service users to realise their potential and integrate back into the community.

Before the presentation of the annual awards, a DVD entitled ‘Getting a life’ was shown to guests to share just how much has been accomplished by Praxis and those who use its services.
