The 90-year-old won the competition with her beautiful autumnal coloured head piece which she has worn to many special occasions over the past four decades.

The March meeting of the WI, because of the weather conditions, was held in Templepatrick Presbyterian Church Hall instead of the nearby primary school and the theme for the evening was ‘make the most of spring’.

The group’s president welcomed everyone to the meeting, on what was a very wintry night, with a special welcome passed to visitors and the evening’s guest speaker Pearl Mitchell.

After the business was conducted Pearl gave a very interesting talk and offered a wide variety of tips on fashion including jewellery, scarves, gloves and hats.

She also gave essential advice on body shapes and what dresses to wear to compliment each individual.

Pearl modelled a beautiful Sara Crozier Hat costing £240, which she had worn at Buckingham Palace. And she also demonstrated putting on eyebrows with a special product, with Ellen Kane modelling.

Mary McIlmoyle presented a small token of appreciation from the group and thanked Pearl for giving such an interesting and wide insight into the fashion world.

The members then modelled their favourite hats for Pearl to judge in the hat competition, with Sally being crowned the winner.

Congratulations were passed to Sally on her recent 90th birthday and on winning the competition.

The magazine prize was won by Roberta Stinson, with the ballot prize by Eilish Fleming and the glove competition was won by Ida Lorimer.

This brought the meeting to a close. Margaret Beattie reminded members of the next meeting, which will be back in Templepatrick Primary School on Wednesday, April 24. The theme will be spring bulbs and the competition will be for a dressed potato.
