High School girls up for World Challenge

EIGHTEEN Coleraine High School pupils, accompanied by two teachers, will be undertaking an adventure of a lifetime in July.

The girls will be travelling to Malawi to undertake a three-week World Challenge Expedition which will involve trekking across the Zomba Plateau and also the Mulanje Massif, the highest mountain range in South Central Africa.

The girls plan to summit the peak of Namasile (2684m) on July 16. The team will then spend a week working with Friends of Mulanje Orphans (FOMO), a community-based orphan care programme which supports over 5000 orphans through a network of 13 centres across Malawi.

They will live on-site and be carrying out practical work, developing the playground area and undertaking painting projects at the centre.

The High Scool team have been preparing for this adventure since November and have worked hard to cover the costs of this expedition.

Their final fundraising activity was yesterday’s Belfast Marathon relay.

Four teams took part, Team Zomba (Caitlin Barry, Leanne Lyons, Christine Arthur, Annie McAfee, Kathryn Reid), Team Eventually (Beth Montgomery, Rachel Hamill, Francesca McLenaghan, Victoria McCormick, Miss R. Clarke), Team Mulanje (Hannah Graham, Cora-Lee Johnston, Eve Turkington, Laureen Ferguson, Mrs L McErlain) and Team Akugbe (Shauna Cooper, Rebecca Duff, Megan McCartney, Heather Spence, Sophie McCloy).

Coleraine High School wish to thank the local businesses who sponsored the teams to enter the relay: The Water Margin, JKC Specialist Cars, Bishops Footwear, Ramore Restaurants Ltd., McShane Glen Leisure Homes and Moore Stephens.

Thanks is also due to Waterside Superstore who kindly donated fleece gloves and snoods for the whole team to use during high-altitude conditions on Mulanje.

Other local businesses provided group discount on team kit and medical expenses. Thanks go to Mr A. Lindsay of Lindsay’s Protective Clothing, Mr G. Blair of Eurowname, Mr A. Mathewson of Mathewson’s Chemist, Ballymoney and Mr T. Cusick of Gordon’s Chemist, New Row, Coleraine.

Once the hard work of GCSE, AS and A Level exams is completed, the girls will depart on July 5.
