Grown your own fruit

Moving into the new season, we can now think about what fruit we can grow in our own gardens.

In the garden centre we have a wide range of top fruit, soft fruit and new patio fruit trees. Top fruit are apples, pears, plums, cherries and greengages. All of these are grown on a Dwarfing Root Stock which restricts the height of the tree, making them suitable for a small garden.

Most of the fruits need planting in groups of two or more for pollination. Some of the fruit trees we have are patio or terrace trees suitable for growing in a large pot. These will grow no more than a metre high and can be grown on a patio or balcony.

Soft fruit are goosberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blueberries, loganberries. Strawberries will be available within the next few weeks, as will rhubarb.

When planting fruit, choose a sunny, well drained site using Westland Rose Tree & Shrub compost which has a four-month feed. If planting into containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No 3, adding some long life-fertiliser, making sure there is good drainage in the container. Keep well watered during the growing season and feed every two weeks with a high potash feed such as Phostrogen.

When planting soft fruit, use the same method but you may have to protect the fruit from birds later in the summer.

Enjoy your tasty, home grown fruit. For further information contact the garden centre.
