William Walker from Coleraine died at the young age of 25. His family handed over a donation of £13,200 to help fund research into sudden cardiac death in young people.

“William is greatly missed by all of his family and friends.

“The generous amount raised will be used in Northern Ireland by Chest, Heart and Stroke to fund research and support in the area of sudden cardiac death in the young.”

The work is being undertaken by Queen’s University Professor, Pascal McKeown.

William died after collapsing at the Balmoral Show. He had been waiting on surgery on a long standing heart problem.

The Walker family send their thanks to everyone for their support. The money was raised in lieu of flowers and through fundraising events organised by Young Farmers Clubs, the North Antrim Riding Club and a memorial event held at Kellys in Portrush.

Lorna Wilmont, Chair of the Causeway CHS Support Group said: “We would like to offer out sincerest condolences to the Walker family and thank them for supporting us.

“We hope the fact that their tragic loss is bringing help to others will be some small comfort in the weeks and months ahead.

“The amount raised indicates the high level of esteem in which William and his family are held. It also reflects the shock throughout the whole community in the sudden loss of someone so young.”
