Larne Museum goes pre-historic

The exhibition tells the story of a 145 million year-old Allosaur skeleton, which was discovered in Wyoming in 1991.

Scientists set about carrying out exhaustive studies of the skeleton, which was nick-named Big Al, and they now probably know more about it than any other dinosaur.

A decade later, following the success of their ground-breaking series Walking with Dinosaurs, the BBC resurrected Big Al for a TV special which explored how he may have lived and died.

And now Larne residents will get a chance to find out more about this extraordinary dinosaur, his environment, the many creatures he shared it with and the times they lived in. The exhibition also examines some of the science and technology behind the Walking with Dinosaur programmes.

Jenny Caldwell, heritage officer for Larne Borough Council said: “Since I started working in the museum in Larne, the most popular request from families has been for us to bring in a dinosaur exhibition, so this year we will be giving families exactly what they have asked for. It will certainly be an exhibition not to be missed.”

The exhibition will be on display from Wednesday, June 1 until Wednesday, August 31, and it is anticipated that demand for entry will be very high.

There will be an admission charge of £3 per person. Due to the demand, it is advised that school/ group bookings should be made in advance.
