Larne siblings set for ‘Broadway’ production

BROTHER and sister Jamie and Johanna Johnston from Larne are set to take part in a unique stage concert featuring a collection of songs from much-loved Broadway musicals.

Broadway Nights is a fully staged and choreographed production of past, present and future Broadway shows, featuring songs from Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, Phantom of the Opera, Chicago and Sister Act to name a few.

The show - which is choreographed by 17-year-old Johanna - has a cast of 25 highly talented performers, including members from Larne based Uplift Performing Arts.

Jamie and Johanna, who have enjoyed much success in other musical productions in recent years, are now relishing the chance to appear on stage together once again, having played starring roles in last summer’s production of Oklahoma at the Theatre at The Mill in Newtownabbey.

Larne Grammar School performing arts pupil Jamie, who was last year nominated for best supporting actor in the prestigious Association of Irish Musical Societies awards (AIMS) for his performance as Gideon in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, told the Times that he and his sister work together “very well”.

“We are very honest with each other and always provide constructive criticism for one another so that we can improve as performers,” he added.

In Broadway Nights, which is produced by Showcase Productions NI, Jamie will be performing solos of Singin’ in the Rain and Whats Up Duloc from Shrek the Musical.

The 18-year-old, who has been taking singing lessons since the age of nine, hopes to go on to study musical theatre at drama college in either London or the USA.

Johanna, who is 17 and studying performing arts at Ulidia Integrated College in Carrick, has been a keen dancer from the tender age of three, is a dance instructor and former head choreographer at Uplift Performing Arts.

As well as being responsible for the choreography of Broadway Nights, Johanna will also take to the stage and perform a solo of All That Jazz from Chicago.

Broadway Nights will be held in Belvoir Players Studio, Belvoir Drive, Belfast on May 4 and 5.
