Last chance to take on Dryathlon for Cancer Research UK

Time is running out for local people to sign up to Dryathlon – Cancer Research UK’s New Year fundraising challenge - before registration closes on January 12.

Dryathlon challenges people to banish the booze in January for a month and raise vital funds to help beat cancer sooner.

A recent Dryathlon survey found that more than six out of 10 people in Northern Ireland have said they were going to make a New Year’s resolution for 2014.

So the charity is urging anyone who hasn’t yet made a New Year’s pledge, or has already found their good intentions slipping away, to sign up to Dryathlon before registration closes on January 12.

‘Dryathletes’ pledge to drop the drink for a month and either get sponsored or donate the money they would have spent on alcohol to the charity.

Supporters can register as individuals or set up a team and get their friends, family and colleagues involved to motivate each other along the way.

Jean Walsh, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for Northern Ireland, said: “It’s fantastic that so many people want to get 2014 off to a flying start by making a New Year’s resolution. It’s not too late to commit to Dryathlon by signing up to ditch the drink for a month and raise vital funds for research in to cancer.

“Even though Jan 1 has passed there is still time to jump aboard the sober express and sign up for this fundraising challenge.

“By taking on Dryathlon people can start the year with a clear head and the satisfaction of knowing they are raising money for a great cause.

“We know that giving up alcohol for a month will really test some people’s willpower, but raising money for the fight against cancer is fantastic motivation to stay on track.”

And for those who find the thought of four weeks off the sauce a bit daunting, there’s the handy ‘tipple tax’ which allows the Dryathlete to donate a £20 penalty to compensate for falling off the wagon.

Cancer Research UK launched Dryathlon for the first time last year and was delighted by its success. More than 33,500 people signed up across the UK and helped raise a fantastic £4 million to help beat cancer.

Every hour, someone in Northern Ireland is diagnosed with cancer. Dryathlon is a great way to raise money for life-saving research to help more men, women and children in the region survive.
