Lisburn plans to celebrate Community Relations Week

Community Relations Week is organised by the Community Relations Council (CRC) and includes events run by local councils, public bodies, schools, and community and voluntary sector organisations.

Events in Lisburn include the presentation of an original artwork entitled Symbols of the Heart to Lisburn City Library on Tuesday June 17.

The artwork has been produced by community groups from Lisburn City and Castlereagh Borough Councils.

They worked under the guidance of Wendy Waring and Laurie Randall as part of a PEACE111 programme organised by the Workers’ Educational Association.

The presentation takes place between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

Lisburn City Council have organised a music and film evening with Joby Fox at the Island Arts Centre on Thursday June 19 from 7.30 to 9pm.

Joby Fox will play music from his album The End of the War and there will be a screening of his film Lost Commandos. Following this there will be an opportunity to discuss important issues in relation to the past and how a better understanding of these can contribute to building a shared future.

The week will begin with its flagship event, the Community Relations Council policy conference entitled ‘Finish the Job’ in Belfast on Monday June 16.

Jacqueline Irwin, CRC’s Chief Executive, says: “Building a united community is as urgent now as it was when the peace agreement was signed in 1998. We have plenty of examples of our capacity to slip back into animosity and old ways of thinking. There is no room for complacency.
