Local MP welcomes Bushmills take over

North Antrim MP Ian Paisley has said that the purchasing of the Bushmills distillery by Mexican drinks firm Jose Cuervo is good news for the local economy.

The firm, who already have a strong presence in the world of whisky and rum production have described the purchase as the most significant in their 250 year history.

Mr Paisley commented: “I have spoken with Senior Executives at Diageo this morning and they have assured me that the takeover will not be putting any existing jobs at risk. Furthermore, this is a company who have a proven track record of developing and expanding global brands and I am convinced that the future is bright for the distillery as a result of this sale.”

“I am looking forward to meeting with officials at Jose Cuervo in the very near future to hear first hand their plans for developing the product of Bushmills Whisky and the employment opportunities that this will present to local people.”

“What is equally as important is the significant role the distillery plays in the local tourist economy. Tours of the site have an annual footfall of over 100,000 visitors and it is one of our stand-out tourist attractions both locally and nationally.”

“What makes it unique is that it isn’t as seasonal as the majority of our tourist attractions here such as the Giant’s Causeway and our stunning coastal walking trails which are of course very reliant on the weather. The distillery maintains a steady flow of tourists all year round, bringing custom to the local communities of North Antrim. Fresh thinking from new owners can only enhance what is already a fantastic attraction in its own right.”
