The date is celebrated annually by the United Nations to promote awareness of endangered species of wild flora and fauna.

NI Water encourages wildlife enthusiasts, of all ages, to celebrate this important day by visiting Silent Valley Mountain Park, nestled in the Mourne Mountains. Silent Valley, owned by NI Water, provides the water supply for both Belfast and Co. Down. The parkland, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is open to walkers and nature lovers alike throughout the year, and is one of Northern Ireland’s premier tourist attractions.

Get walking, and keep your heart healthy, along one of the Park’s seven nature trails. Whether you enjoy a gentle stroll or are a keen hill walker there is a walk for you! Enjoy the diverse landscape of Silent Valley which offers a rich natural biodiversity, and the breathtaking views of the spectacular mountain along the way.

NI Water Education Manager, Jane Jackson, explains:

“Water is our most vital natural resource, and all ecosystems depend on it; in Northern Ireland we are fortunate to be surrounded by a diverse range of flora and fauna.

‘‘Mountains are important in helping to encourage sustainable economic growth. They are an essential source of vital resources, such as freshwater and food, as well as providing recreation for many people. We are very lucky to have a hidden treasure like Silent Valley in the Mourne Mountains, allowing everyone access to the beauty of nature.

‘‘This World Wildlife Day, come along and see the natural beauty that Silent Valley has to offer.’’
