Teachers, Heads of Department and members of the Senior Leadership Team had worked meticulously to create Centre Assessed Grades for students across all

their subjects in May, but there was great uncertainty about to the extent to which these grades would be altered by the algorithm of the moderation process applied by examinations boards; in Loreto College, as in most schools, many Year 13 and Year 14 students had had their hopes dashed as many results had been downgraded.

On August 17, the news broke that first the GCSE results, then the A level and AS Level results, would revert to the Centre Assessed Grades. This brought relief to many Loreto College students, who are now celebrating some really impressive results.

Loreto College Principal Miss Belinda Toner paid tribute to the Year 12, Year 13 and Year 14 students, who had worked hard in unprecedented and difficult circumstances to complete their qualifications through online study, denied the chance to sit their final examinations. Miss Toner also wished to congratulate the Loreto College teaching staff, who had worked hard to prepare the students as far as possible, and to calculate grades fairly and mindfully in response to their efforts and previous attainments.

Miss Toner congratulated a number of Loreto College students who had gained outstanding results: Anna McGinley (Y12) who gained 12 A* grades, and Cara McLaughlin and David Farren, who each gained 10 A* grades, as well as the many students who gained an exceptional number of A* and A grades, with wonderful achievements across the College’s academic and vocational range of subjects.

“These students achieved at the very highest level,” Miss Toner commented, “and I am confident that they would have done so in any year through the usual examination processes. Their teachers’ assessment of their ability and work-rate is entirely accurate.”

As the new academic year begins, Loreto College is looking forward to welcoming back all its students to work hard, to recover their friendships and their partnerships with their teachers, and to build on the excellent work completed partly online during the unprecedented circumstances of the Covid lockdown.
