Magherafelt singer set for role in West Side Story in Belfast

Magherafelt singer Rebecca Murphy treads the boards in the award-winning New Lyric Operatic Company’s West side Story opening next Tuesday at the Grand Opera House in Belfast.

The 20-year-old is currently in her final year of a music degree in which she specialises in Classical singing.

It represents a big break for the local woman who plays one of the leading female roles - Maria - in the production directed by Kieran Griffiths.

Rebecca has performed across the local community from a very young age and also takes lessons in piano and violin. She has been vocally trained in Classical singing both by Meta Bell and by Scottish mezzo-soprano Debra Stuart.

Her theatre credits include roles in ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Wizard of Oz’, ‘Lés Miserables’ and ’50 Shillings and New Suit of Clothes’, an original show performed at The Grand Opera House (2013). She has also sung the protagonist role of ‘Dido’ in Purcell’s ‘’Dido and Aeneas’ with Queens Opera.

She has sung with the QUB Chamber Choir, and has performed in Brahms ‘Requiem’, Bach ‘Magnificat’ and ‘Rutter Magnificat’ with the Belfast Philharmonic Choir, accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra. Rebecca holds several awards from local Classical Music festivals, including Holywood and Ballymena as well as receiving an award for the ‘Most promising vocalist.’

West Side Story runs in the Opera House from Tuesday 18 – Saturday 22 November.
