Magical month walk at the Umbra Nature Reserve

EXPERIENCE the magic of moths, their magnificent colours and fascinating flitting antics on a guided walk through the Umbra Nature Reserve, nestled between Downhill and Benone on Sunday, June 10.

With more than 200 species of moth recorded at this unique coastal grassland site, ranging from the six-spot burnet and elephant hawkmoth, to the rare small eggar and scarce crimson and gold, the Ulster Wildlife Trust wants to encourage endless enthusiasm for these elusive aerial insects.

Moth traps will be set up overnight to capture nocturnal species which will be released at the event for everyone to view - weather permitting.

Reserve staff along with the Northern Ireland National Moth Recorder will be on hand to help identify the sheer variety of moths, answer questions and dispel common myths. A leisurely ramble around the nature reserve will also uncover the beautiful day flying species like the cinnabar, and reveal more of the site’s hidden gems.

The Magical Moth event will take place from 11am to 1pm on Sunday 10th June.

Visitors are invited to bring a picnic and enjoy fine views of the North coast. Suitable outdoor clothing and stout footwear are recommended.
