Major architecture award for Glenariff home

A private home in Glenariff has received a major award at the Royal Society of Ulster Architects’ 2012 Design Awards.

Glenariff House, designed by McGarry-Moon Architects from Kilrea, won a category award for residential buildings. It was also shortlisted for the Liam McCormick prize for Building of the Year, which was awarded to the Lyric Theatre.

Glenariffe House was nominated for this top award by an independent judging panel who said that, ‘....this house respects the rural architecture of the area in its massing, its white rendered exterior and the way it forms exterior space. .....The interior, in contrast, is unmistakeably urbane. The section and placement of windows allow stunning views while allowing one to feel contained. It is also admirably sustainable environmentally.’

The Design Awards were presented at a prestigious ceremony, hosted by RSUA, at Titanic Belfast on Thursday, May 17.

The RSUA Design Awards were supported by Wood NI, Armagh City and District Council, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Department of the Environment, the Department for Social Development and the Strategic Investment Board.

The standard of entries to the 2010 RSUA Design Awards was extremely high and a tribute to the quality local architecture, as the judging panel concluded that some of this year’s entries could confidently hold their head high in national-level competitions.
