Mayor celebrates Ulster Scots Week

The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council has celebrated Ulster Scots Week in Coleraine and Ballymoney.

Alderman Mark Fielding visited the Ullans Centre in Ballymoney and Cuil Rathain Historical & Cultural Centre in Coleraine to hear more about efforts to promote awareness and appreciation of the language.

Alderman Fielding said: “I was pleased to have this opportunity to celebrate Ulster Scots Week which aims to showcase the history, culture and living use of the language.

“My thanks go to the young people who provided an excellent demonstration of traditional music and to all those within the Borough who are committed to preserving this unique linguistic heritage.”

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Arts Team marked Ulster Scots Week with a virtual concert featuring musicians Willie Drennan, Ian Burrows and John Trotter.

The audience enjoyed an evening of music, song, and Ulster-Scots rhyme broadcast via Facebook. The event also featured storytelling from Janice Witherspoon who explored tales of Ulster Scots language and culture.
