This exciting educational resource allows children to explore, experience and celebrate Portrush like never before.

The town’s four primary schools received their Teacher Resource Folders, adventure packs and an iPad as part of the launch of the YEP! App, which is available to download for free from the pp Store or Google Play.

Young Explorer Portrush was funded through the Open Legacy Fund and managed by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. It is a collaborative, teacher-led resource involving all Portrush schools. The project was led by the Heritage Group committee member Jade Thorne, a Portrush local and teacher at Carnalridge Primary School.

“We have had so much input from different areas of expertise, all based in Portrush, to bring a fantastic resource for our children,” she explained.

The ‘Young Explorer Portrush’ App offers movie clips presented by local actor Andy Porter to engage the children in a light hearted and informative way, while there is lots of information available for more in depth research and study. Drone footage accompanies the adventures if it is not possible for children to be ‘out and about’. The adventures are all aligned to the NI Curriculum, and allow World Around Us topics to have a Portrush focus.

Portrush Heritage Group’s project leader Jade added: “Exploring and expanding knowledge of their own environment will give our kids a sense of belonging and who they are in the world and a sense of pride in their local area. These things are so important for their mental health, especially after a particularly difficult and isolating year.”

Anyone with an interest in Portrush, its people, stories, landscapes, flora and fauna and landmarks can download the app and enjoy one of the ten adventures in the town.
