Mundy makes his Lisburn debut at the Island

IRISH singer songwriter Mundy will be bringing his folky, acoustic strum to the Island Arts Centre on Friday November 2 at 8pm.

Mundy’s upbeat style of mainly acoustic, folk-based pop/rock has continued to hit a high note with fans down the years. Comparisons to Damien Rice and Josh Ritter are frequent, but the artist, who has performed with acts like Van Morrison, Oasis, White Stripes, Imelda May, Alanis Morissette and the Manic Street Preachers, credits his style to early musical influences, which include Bob Dylan, REM, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and early U2 records.

Over the years hit singles have included ‘Mexico’, ‘July’ and ‘To You I Bestow’ from Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ soundtrack.

In 2007 and 2008 Mundy’s version of ‘Galway Girl’ became the biggest download hit in Ireland for two years in a row. Speaking about some of his signature songs ‘Galway Girl’ and ‘July’ Mundy said he feels he has been very lucky to have one or two songs from nearly every album that his fans have really taken to their hearts.

Mundy has had huge success in Ireland since he was a teenager plucked from the streets of Dublin.

“I moved to Dublin when I was 17 and started busking,” he explained. “At 19 I got a record deal with Sony after they saw me playing at a few singer/songwriter nights.

“I really couldn’t believe it was real but at the age of 20 I was out on tour with Alanis Morrisette.”

Since then Mundy has continued touring and releasing albums, much to the delight of his legions of loyal fans.

Last year he released his fifth studio album , ‘Shuffle’, his first record of covers featuring songs from artists like Tom Waits, John Prine and Paul Simon.

Mundy is already working on his next album, which he hopes to have released next year. “I am working on writing it at the minute and the guts of it are finished. Releasing an album is all about the maths so I hope people will want to buy it.”

A keen live performer and following tours on both sides of the Atlantic Mundy is looking forward to visiting Lisburn next month. “I’ve played Belfast a lot but never been to Lisburn and I am really looking forward to it,” he said.

“I had a great gig in Limavady a while back so I am hoping Lisburn will be just as good.”
