The exhibition was launced by the Mayor of Coleraine, councillor David Harding.

Community Groups including Causeway Friendship Club, Age Concern Coleraine, Causeway Yarnspinners, Ballymena Friendship Club, Glenravel Young at Heart and Carnlough Youth Club, participated in My Treasure storytelling sessions enabling them to identify their ‘treasured object’ as well as the particular story they wished to tell through this exhibition project.

An array of treasured objects ranging from a World War I 5th Dragoon Guards Helmet to a battered old teddy bear are on display in this exhibition.

‘My Treasure’ highlights the stories and cherished objects of local people from a range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, each with their own unique story to tell.

It provides a snap shot of how diverse our local communities have become.

Many of the stories and treasured objects featured in this exhibition reveal participants personal histories, highlight their customs and traditions, where they have grown up, where they left behind, how they have come to settle locally.

The exhibition also provides a focus to build understanding and respect between communities living in the Borough of Coleraine.

This exhibition is part of the North East PEACE III Cultural Fusions heritage based project which is being delivered by Mid-Antrim and Causeway Museum Services.

The project is funded under the European Union’s PEACE III Programme and is managed on behalf of the Special EU Programmes Body by the North East PEACE III Partnership

You can see the exhibition until August 31st, after that it will move on to other museum and community venues. Mid-Antrim and Causeway Museum Services will use this exhibition resource long into the future. For further information on the My Treasure exhibition project, contact John Hamilton on 7034 7235.
