NRC students get to grips with human rights issues

BTECH Health and Social Care Students at Northern Regional College (NRC) in Newtownabbey recently completed a four-week course in ‘Understanding Human Rights’, accredited by the Open College Network.

The course, which provided the young people with information about human rights and their relevance to people with disabilities, is unique to Northern Ireland.

The Level One course was delivered by Heather Logan, Training Officer from Disability Action’s Centre on Human Rights for People with Disabilities.

“The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has confirmed that people with disabilities have the same human rights as everyone else,” Heather explained. “As individuals develop skills for life, it is important that they understand their own human rights and those of a person with a disability, so they can identify unfair treatment and have the confidence to challenge that treatment.”

Chelsea Milligan, a student who undertook the course, said: “I learned so much that will help me in everyday life. I really enjoyed the course.”

Marie Hayes, Associate Lecturer, Health and Social Care added: “The course was excellent and the students really enjoyed it. The content integrated with the core units within the Health and Social Care Diploma perfectly and provided an opportunity for the students to become more aware of human rights.”
