NRC Students ‘Live Project’ Enhances Board Game

The Art and Design Department at the Northern Regional College has recently had the opportunity to work with a local Ballymoney board game development company, through its participation in the Department for Employment (DEL) funded ‘Employer Support Programme’.

The programme which was operated through NRC’s Business Support Team, brought together NRC Foundation Art & Design Lecturer Paula McLarnon, students David McCartney and Clair Donnelly with Bernard Sparkes from Tubby Media. The partnership provided the opportunity for the students to deliver a business solution for one of the organisations board games.

NRC Lecturer Paula McLarnon explains, “Tubby Media are the creators of the board game ‘Convoy’ and they were seeking to create the packaging for the game. We created a brand/ logotype design for ‘Convoy’ with the strap line ‘Play, Dominate, Win’. We also improved the navigation of the board, by simplifying the layout and we created two packaging designs for the front of the game box, one for adults and the other for children”.

Foundation Art and Design students Claire Donnelly and David Kilpatrick said,”We really enjoyed this project. It gave us an insight into the processes of how this industry works and as we are both hoping to follow a career in graphic design, this was an invaluable experience”

Commenting on the success of the project Darlene Hagan-Bezgin, NRC Senior Lecturer in Art and Design said, “We try to actively encourage and develop curriculum, which meets the needs of industry. Having this opportunity for students to work on live projects which are of benefit to the local economy, is one way to do this. Students gain so much from this experience in terms of their learning, and knowledge and consequently this aids them to make clear and concise choices on their future career plans”.
