Omniplex Cinemas put Dunlop legacy film centre stage

Omniplex Cinemas will be preparing for an influx of bikes in the car park next week as they get set to screen Road, a documentary about two sets on Northern Irish brothers whose name has become synonymous with motorcycle road racing; Joey and his younger brother Robert Dunlop and Robert’s sons William and Michael, following the film’s general release on Wednesday, June 11.

Road will be shown in two Omniplex theatres in Lisburn and the Dunlops’ home county of Antrim. The first screening will be followed by a Q&A via satellite with Michael and William Dunlop, both of whom feature in the documentary along with road racing giant, TT Winner and good friend, John McGuinness, live from London.

Operations Director, Paul John Anderson explains why Omniplex are so excited about this home-grown film.

“The Dunlops’ successes and dedication was a story that touched a lot of people. We’re very proud to be screening Road; it’s a real example and celebration of Northern Ireland’s local talent and a great tribute to a legendary family,” says Paul John.

He added: “Small films, though important, aren’t always accessible so this was a great opportunity for us to reach out to the community and show a film that matters to them.”

Produced by award-winning local company, DoubleBand Films, Road sets out the building blocks of the Dunlops’ careers, from the early days of riding bikes around the country lanes close to home, to their first competitive races, then onwards and upwards to World Championships.

During their careers, Robert and Joey Dunlop were best known for their skill on the road and their dedication to their sport and their families. Robert was the first person to be elected into the Irish Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2005, whilst Joey received an MBE for his services to Sport and later an OBE for his Charity work with Romanian children.

The film promises to share fast-paced race-day scenes, giving an inside look into the world of motorcycle racing, the unconditional support from loved ones and friends and is wonderfully narrated by fellow County Antrim man and Hollywood legend, Liam Neeson.

“Road had a great response when it premiered at the Belfast Film Festival so we’re excited to be able to screen it especially in Antrim,” Paul John continues. “We foresee a lot of interest in this film and look forward to welcoming everyone from motorcycling enthusiasts and friends of the family, to movie buffs and those interested to see what promises to be both, adrenalin fuelled and emotionally draining footage.”
