Oscar-nominated Seamus set to receive honorary degree

Seamus will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Art (DFA) for ‘his outstanding contribution to film-making, contemporary art and cinematography’.

The Armagh man, who was nominated last year for an Oscar for his stunning work on the movie Anna Karenina, will receive the honorary degree at the university’s summer graduations.

In 2007 he was also nominated for his work as a cinematographer for his work on the block buster movie Atonement.

Seamus is currently working on the much anticipated movie Fifty Shades of Grey which is due for release on Valentine’s Day next year.

Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing the picture, which stars Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele.

The university is honouring the inspirational achievements of 13 key personalities from the worlds of sport, the arts, public life, business and education, at its summer graduations.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Barnett said, “Ulster is recognised equally for its world class sporting achievements, cultural excellence and significant contribution to industry, healthcare and education.

“It is important that we not only produce talented graduates, but that we equip them with the confidence and ambition to focus on, and achieve, excellence.”

Others to receive degrees include Irish and Ulster rugby international Tommy Bowe, actress and film producer Roma Downey and champion jockey Tony McCoy.
