Pets firework safety

The Nurses and Vets at Braemar Veterinary Clinic receive many calls from anxious owners as the Firework season approaches.

For some animals it’s a very frightening time so it’s important that owners remain calm and relaxed.

Be careful not to reward fearful behaviour with cuddles and reassurance as this may reinforce their fear.

On the evenings you expect fireworks; it is advisable to ensure your dog has been taken for a walk early before the fireworks start.

Make sure pets are safely inside and close all doors and windows and pull blinds or curtains. It is sometimes helpful to play music or leave the television on to mask the sound of the fireworks outside.

Stay indoors with your dog to prevent him from associating your absence and the fireworks with him becoming fearful. Prepare a den for them to hide in while the fireworks are going off, ideally days in advance so they are accustomed to using it.

Sadly some pets are already advertised as lost, frightened away by the noise of fireworks. Make sure your pets are micro-chipped. If you know your pet has reacted badly to fireworks previously it is advisable to make an early appointment with your vet to discuss possible treatments.
