Mayor, Councillor Audrey Wales MBE, has been looking back at just one recent example of this important focus by recalling Holocaust Memorial Day 2017 and how it was marked.

“Council was delighted to support Holocaust Memorial Day and its theme ‘How can life go on?’ with an event that was supported by the Executive Office through Mid and East Antrim Borough Council Good Relations Programme,” Cllr Wales said.

“We have enjoyed two events, hosted locally for our post primary schools, which have been both thought provoking and educational for our young people.

“It has been wonderful to meet Billy Kohner MBE and hear his family’s personal story of how they came to Northern Ireland as Jewish refugees during the Second World War and also how life ‘did go on’ for this family post war, as they settled here and integrated into the local community, setting up a local business and creating employment,” she added.

These events were an opportunity to think about the messages of this story – the cruelty of war, impact of division, but also the kindness and generosity of strangers as we continue to ‘Work Together to Create A Better Future For All’.

The event hosted approximately 120 young people including student representatives from Dunclug College, Castle Tower and Ballymena Academy.
