Pupils urged to design the next Trocaire box

The competition has been launched as part of this year’s Lenten campaign in recognition of the support given by teachers, pupils and their families to the communities it helps each year.

“People from Co. Antrim were incredibly generous last Lent with Down and Connor Diocese donating £637,172 through the Trocaire box,” said David O’Hare of Trocaire.

“It’s deeply inspiring to hear about the enthusiasm with which primary school children receive their new Trocaire box each year and how families, whatever their circumstances, fill the box with change for people in poor parts of the world. The families we support are continually amazed and so grateful that children here at home are thinking of them and offering such life-saving support.”

For almost 40 years, teachers have used the Trocaire box and accompanying education resources to teach children about the world and the problems faced by communities in developing countries.

“The amount of commitment primary schools have shown is remarkable,” said David.

“This is why we’re handing over the design of the box to primary school children for our 40th anniversary. They have made the Trocaire box the symbol of hope it is today.”

The Trocaire box competition is open to all Co. Antrim primary schools. Classes can create an image, a slogan, a poem or a reflection.
