Recycle your old TV after switchover

With the digital TV switchover taking place this month, Newtownabbey Borough Council is encouraging residents to recycle their old televisions by taking them to Bruslee Recycling Centre.

As the analogue signal is switched off, the council anticipates a rise in the number of old TV sets that will be scrapped as residents switch to new digital sets.

Alderman Billy DeCourcy, Chair of the Environment Committee said: “Newtownabbey Borough Council recognises that many people will take this opportunity to upgrade to a new digital TV set. The council is committed to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill and we encourage everyone to take their unwanted TV set to their local recycling centre and not to place TVs in the black bin.”

Paul Kerr, Recycling Officer at the council added: “Research indicates that only one third of us recycle electrical appliances that we have replaced, and a further 10 per cent put redundant or unused electrical appliances straight into the bin, yet TVs can easily be broken down and the parts recycled into something new. Residents who are unable to get to Bruslee Recycling Centre can request the council’s bulky waste collection service which will pick up your old TV from your home for free.”
