‘Reel’ issues for young people

PUPILS from Laurelhill Community College recently took part in an education outreach event as part of the Coca-Cola Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People.

This programme of education events, Reel Issues for Youth, is sponsored by Phoenix Gas and aims to bring the power of film, guest speakers and debate to a number of schools throughout Northern Ireland.

During the visit a classroom at the school was transformed into a mini- cinema and newsreels taken from digital film archives were shown portraying Ireland in the early twentieth century. This was followed by a presentation by a representative from NI Screen, explaining the detail and historical relevance of each of the clips.

Louise McManus from Phoenix Gas was invited down to sit in on the session and said: “The feedback from staff and pupils at the school was that the event was interesting, engaging and informative. We are delighted to be supporting this programme and it was great to see how the power of film can bring what is learned in the classroom to life.”
