Runners on the pace at annual 10k

Over 370 budding athletes from across the borough and beyond donned their running shoes for the annual Craigavon Lakes 10km Race and Fun Run.

Organised by Craigavon Borough Council in partnership with St Peter’s Athletic Club, the race and fun run started and finished at Craigavon Watersports Centre and took in the pathways around the Craigavon Lakes and City Parks areas.

Seasoned runners and novices alike participated in either the 10 kilometre or five kilometre races with many families also taking part in the one kilometre family challenge.

Conditions on the evening were warm and sunny which attracted a large number of spectators to enjoy the evening’s events. The charity for the event was the British Heart Foundation Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, with chief executive of the charity Simon Gillespie taking part in the race.

The winners were as follows: 10k male winner: Conor Curran with a time of 33.45; 10k male 2nd place: Conor Magill with a time of 34.19; 10k male 3rd place: Gary Henderson with a time of 34.46; 10k ladies winner: Heather Foley with a time of 37.16; 10k ladies 2nd place: Patricia O’Hagan with a time of 37.32; 10 ladies 3rd place: Donna Evans with a time of 40.07; 10k wheelchair race: Paul Hannan with a time of 33.21; 5k male winner: Peter Murray with a time 18.28; 5k female winner: Naomh Beattie 22.02

“The annual 10k is always a fantastic event and this year was no exception,” said the now Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Colin McCusker. “I was delighted to be there on the night to hand out the prizes and to meet with the chief executive of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) which was the chosen charity for the night.”

Mr Gillespie said: “I was honoured to take part in Craigavon’s 10k and humbled by the passion and competitiveness of local athletes. Running is a fantastic way to look after your heart and the fundraising efforts of all the competitors will help us continue the fight for every heartbeat.”

St Peter’s Athletics Club’s Dwyer O’Hagan added: “This sporting spectacle offered something for everyone; from the serious athlete to those who took part just for the fun of it. I’d like to say a big well done to all who took part and congratulations to the winners.”
