School building improvements at St Brigid’s

Mr Conlon (Principal) explained: “We have got final approval for a £330,000 extension to the main school building. We are absolutely delighted that we have secured such a large sum of money in a very difficult financial climate and as a result we can continue to improve our school.

“This will involve increasing the size of our Y6 and Y7 classrooms; increasing the pupils’ toilet facilities on the ground and first floor; installing a lift to provide disability access to the first floor; double glazing of the assembly hall and the building of a corridor, with cloak room facilities, to connect all of the classrooms on the first floor.”

Work will start on the school extension in March 2015 and is due for completion in September.

This latest phase of work will complete the £1.2 million pound school improvement programme.

Mr Conlon outlined the building improvement programme: “Work initially started on an attractive, modern entrance for the school and was followed by the building of a wet room to provide facilities for disabled children. The biggest part of the project then followed with the refurbishment of all the classrooms, corridors, assembly hall and administration area; a state of the art gas heating systems; new roofs, electrical re-wring of the whole school and new, security controlled access doors throughout the school.

“Work to improve St. Brigid’s Primary School continues at the moment. We are not standing still. At present new windows are being fitted in our canteen and in the coming weeks workers will be on site installing additional perimeter fencing and a pedestrian gate to link our school playground to the adjoining car park.

“More mI was delighted to announce all of these plans to the children and a big cheer went up at assembly last Friday! Our children will be involved in this project too. They will be learning about the construction industry and following the work of the architects and planners. The Student Council will also be involved in choosing the colour schemes and the design of the cloakrooms so that our pupils can feel that they have ownership of this project.”
