Society holds Autumn show

HILLSBOROUGH Horticultural Society held it’s Autumn show in the Village Centre on Saturday September 8.

In spite of a wet summer there was a good entry of flowers and vegetables and the children’s classes were well supported.

Main prize-winners were as follows:

The National Dahlia Silver Medal Certificate awarded to the best exhibit of dahlias in the Show went to Mr John Robinson, Thornleigh Park, Lisburn.

The McCutcheon Cup awarded to the best exhibit in the class for a collection of five vegetables on a tray was won by Mrs Sara McCorkell, Lower Quilly Road, Dromore.

The Ray Martin Memorial Perpetual Cup awarded to the exhibitor gaining most points in the cut flower classes went to Mr John Robinson, Thornleigh Park, Lisburn.

Mrs Hilary Glenn, Scolban Road, Dromore won the the Morrison Perpetual Cup awarded to the exhibitor gaining most points in the section for flowering plants, while the Blaris Cup awarded to the exhibitor gaining most points in the vegetable classes was won by Mrs Eleanor Alexander, Downshire Park, Hillsborough.

The winner of the Amy Green Memorial Trophy awarded for the best exhibit in the flower arranging classes was Mrs Pat Patterson, Lisburn.

The Thompson Cup awarded for the best exhibit in the classes for children was won by Miss Rachel Lyle, Ballyrobert, Helen’s Bay.

The Eglantine Perpetual Challenge Rose Bowl presented to the Hillsborough Horticultural Society competitor who achieves the highest combined points at both Spring and Autumn Shows was won by Mrs Eleanor Alexander, Downshire Park, Hillsborough.

The McDowell Perpetual Challenge Cup awarded to the Society member gaining most points in the Society’s Fuchsia classes went to Mrs Eleanor Alexander, Downshire Park, Hillsborough.

Meanwhile the first meeting of the Society after the summer break will be on Wednesday 26 September at 8pm in Hillsborough Village Centre when Mr Arthur Dixon from the Rose Society will give a talk on ‘Roses for your Garden’. Everyone invited.
