Spring Clean for Broughshane

Live Here Love Here joined forces with SCOPE Group, Broughshane Improvement Committee, Mid and East Antrim Council and the Mayor, Audrey Wales, to carry out a ‘BIG Spring Clean’ of the village.

The SCOPE Group, a branch of The George Sloan Centre in Ballymena, are a group of young people aging from 18-30 with a varying range of disabilities who feel strongly that they want to be integrated into the community and who strive to be part of every facet of community life.

The group, along with the help of Broughshane Improvement Committee, swept the streets and tidied up flower beds, before heading down to the river for a litter pick.

The SCOPE Group were shortlisted for the ‘Live Here Love Here’ Community Awards last month for their dedication to the community and the environment and were presented with a certificate on Tuesday, March 28, to recognise their hard work.

SCOPE Group and Broughshane Improvement Committee participated in the clean up as part of Live Here Love Here’s BIG Spring Clean along with hundreds of other groups, schools and individuals throughout Northern Ireland.

Speaking afterwards, Mary Allison, who works with the SCOPE Group said: “We are really pleased to be working with Live Here Love Here and Broughshane Improvement Committee this year to launch the BIG Spring Clean.

“The SCOPE Group always enjoy being out in the town and have a great pride in the area. It means a lot to them to be thanked and recognised for the work they do in the community.”

Jodie McAneaney, Live Here Love Here Manager said: “This is the first year we have launched the BIG Spring Clean Roadshow Week and we are absolutely delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the local communities.

“Street cleansing costs £43 million each year but we can all play a part in reducing that figure by not dropping litter. We hope our BIG Spring Clean volunteers will inspire others to do their bit to ensure we live in a clean, safe and beautiful environment.”

The BIG Spring Clean is Northern Ireland’s largest volunteering campaign, committed to cleaning up local areas and improving the environment. The campaign is supported by all 11 Councils in the province.

BIG Spring Clean 2016 mobilised over 107,000 volunteers in clean up events across Northern Ireland and removed an amazing 298 tonnes of waste from our streets, coastal and rural areas.
