Strictly men only: Coleraine FC to host Men’s Health Week event

AN event aimed at the men in our community will be held at Coleraine Showgrounds early next month.

To coincide with Men’s Health Week, the Football Club have teamed up with CRUN and the Public Health Agency in an effort to help men get real about their health and to encourage them to turn their words into actions.

Men’s Health week will run from Monday, June 10 to to Sunday, June 16.

The theme is “Action Men – Turning Words into Actions”.

On Monday June 10, a free event, funded by the Public Health Agency will be held in the Coleraine Social Club from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

The event will give everyone – health providers, service providers, youth groups, sporting bodies, community organisations, employers, churches, the media, parents and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to take better care of their health and seek help and treatment.

According to the Public Health Agency a broad range of research highlights that men experience a disproportionate burden of ill health and die too young.

Research shows that local men in Ireland die on average almost five years younger than women do.

Data also reveals that poor lifestyles are responsible for a high proportion of chronic diseases in men, and that late presentation to health services leads to a large number of problems becoming untreatable in men.

More worryingly latest research says that men are three times more likely than women to die by suicide.

As part of the event Conor McCafferty from Zest, will talk on what it means to be a man and explore some of the statistics.

A spokesperson for the CRUN told The Times: “Men require support and encouragement to take action on their health. Events like these will help them to do so.”
