East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden this week marked the start of Foster Care Fortnight by praising the “essential, compassionate and rewarding” role that carers play.

Ms Sugden on Monday (May 10) arranged for the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Cloonavin offices to be lit up orange – the colour associated with foster caring.

“The role foster carers play in society, and individually, by giving a child in need a safe, stable and loving home, cannot be underestimated,” Ms Sugden said.

“It gives that child, or children, the opportunity to live a normal family life after having experienced disruption or trauma in theirs.

“Foster carers describe the experience as incredibly rewarding. It’s clear that it is often a win-win situation for families and children.

“Anyone who is interested in fostering a child should really consider making that next step and make contact with fostering services.”
