A feast of food at maritime fayre

LOCAL foodies can look forward to a feast of festive maritime fayre over the next week as local chefs swap their chef’s whites for sailor’s hats during the city’s Clipper Homeoming Festival.

For a flavoursome weekend of good food and maritime entertainment, don’t miss the Flavours of the Foyle Seafood Festival, taking place this Saturday June 30 (12noon – 8pm) and Sunday July 1 (1pm-6pm) at Queen’s Quay. The festival will feature a series of live cookery demonstrations by 14 local chefs from across the North West and further afield, including the Beechill, Browns, Mourne Seafood Bar, Watts and Co, and more. There will also be a special Theatre of Food Experience with NI Good Food and celebrity chef Paula McIntyre.

It will be a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds, with a number of imaginative nautical themed performances by some talented theatre companies to entertain as you eat. From giant lobsters to dancing prawns, the acts range from the hilarious to the surreal, guaranteed to keep you amused.

Performances will feature shows such as Lobster a la Carte and Fishermans Tails, ice sculpture, street theatre, storytelling, puppetry and other fun activities, as well as a wide ranging musical programme including a performance by internationally acclaimed group Sontas.

And if that whets your appetite then why not join The Flavours of the Foyle Seafood Trail, offering the perfect opportunity for seafood fans to sample some of the best locally sourced fish, as local restaurants showcase the rich resources from our shores. A whole host of venues will feature a range of specially tailored seafood dishes during the trail, which takes place from Saturday June 30 until July 8, with something fishy to suit every palate.

Sample baked seabass fillets with fresh vine tomatoes, lime and ginger at La Sosta, fresh seafood chowder at The Tower Hotel, or fillet of hake in a coriander cream sauce at the City Hotel, to name but a few of the mouth watering dishes featured on the menu.

The Festival has been organised by Derry City Council, in conjunction with NI Good Food, NITB, The Loughs Agency, Foras na Gaeilge and the Ulster Scots Agency. For a full programme of all the events taking place during the Clipper Homecoming Festival, see www.derrycity.gov.uk/clipper.
