Ulster Sports Museum Exhibition at Town Hall

It is remarkable that for such a small place as Ulster, so many sporting stars have made their mark in their chosen sports and for the next few weeks, Ballymoney Borough Council is pleased to host an exciting exhibition that recognises and honours their achievements.

The Ulster Sports Museum Exhibition which tells the story of the great sporting achievements of Ulster men and women on the international and national stages has just gone on display in Ballymoney Town Hall.

Dame Mary Peters who is President of the Ulster Sports Museum Association and who was present at the launch of the exhibition last week, described how the exhibition is part of the on-going work towards the establishment of a permanent sports museum to celebrate our sporting past and inspire our sporting future. She recalled how she had been brought to Ballymoney Town Hall many years ago to see the Kennedy Kane McArthur plaque and was delighted to be back in Ballymoney for the launch of the exhibition.

To add a local element to the main body of the Ulster Sports Museum Exhibition, Ballymoney Museum and Sports Development staff have created an exhibition which highlights the exceptional individuals who have been inducted into Ballymoney Sports Advisory Committee’s Hall of Fame. The exhibition spans the years 2000-2010 and includes sporting heroes from the world of hurling, rugby, motorsports, cycling, bowling, football and hockey.

Speaking at the launch, the Mayor of Ballymoney Borough Council, Cllr Ian Stevenson, remarked that “there is a wealth of sporting talent in the Ballymoney Borough and we are very proud of the many achievements that our local sportsmen, sportswomen and teams have attained over the years.”

The exhibition which has been supported by Camelot, DSD and the Ulster Bank, certainly provides inspiration and an opportunity to reflect and reminisce about the tremendous impact made by Ulster’s sports stars over the years. It includes archival film footage of great moments in sport as well as providing an opportunity to express your own view. It is on display in Ballymoney Town Hall until Thursday 14 July and admission is free. Opening hours are Monday – Thursday and Saturday 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-4.30pm.
