Why Tracy Chapman is Victoria’s go-to artist

When you are a busy dance studio owner and choreographer, staying inside during a lockdown doesn’t come easily.

However, award-winning choreographer Victoria Lagan is finding ways to stay busy and stay safe. Here she answers our questions:

Q. What is your favourite song/album?

A. Tracy Chapman is my favourite singer of all time! She has so many amazing songs - Crossroads, Talking about a Revolution, Fast Car, I’m Ready. She’s that one singer that I go back to time and time again throughout my life.

Q. What is your favourite film?

A. My favourite all time would probably be “A Little Princess” but I’m also a sucker for “Pretty Woman”.

Q. What is your favourite piece of classical music?

A. Ludovico Einaudi album “In a Time Lapse” - I could listen to it a hundred times and just relax.

Q. Who is your favourite artist?

A. Ohhh I’m not a big art person, but I do have a couple of prints from local artist Alan Duke around my house which I adore.

Q. What is your favourite play?

A. Good old Irish plays for me. I love “The Weir” (by Conor McPherson) and “The Plough and the Stars” (by Sean O’Casey).

Q. What is your favourite musical?

A. Rent

Q. What is your most special moment in the arts?

A.I’ve had some amazing moments throughout my career in the arts such as winning various producer awards, my dancers winning overall titles at competitions, our NATD exam students receiving 100% distinctions in their exams last year. But I have to say, in my opinion, the most special moments don’t happen on stage or at competition, they happen in the studio on a daily basis - the first time a kid gets a turn they’ve spent months working on or witnessing life long friendships being born.

Q. What ‘classic’ just doesn’t do it for you?

A. Annie. I don’t know why, it just doesn’t do it for me.

Q. What do you plan to read/watch/listen to/revisit during the Coronavirus lockdown?

A. Honestly believe it or not, I haven’t as much as watched a movie or read a book yet! I’ve been trying to use the time so far to do my gardening, things around the house, catch up (virtually) with old friends and exercise. I don’t cope well with sitting around so trying to keep busy.

The only thing I have watched so far is Drew Diva’s live performance on Facebook. I’m missing all my VLDD studio families and I can’t wait to return to work.

I’ve been teaching online classes which is brilliant for the kids, but personally I am really missing seeing their smiles and hearing their laughs. During this time, I feel very fortunate knowing I have a job I absolutely love and can’t wait to return
