1 in 10 youngpeople jobless

MORE than one in ten people in Londonderry are unemployed, according to the Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland.

Joblessness is worse for young people aged between 16 and 25 than for the population as a whole.

According to Mr McCausland: “At April 2012 (latest available figures), there were 20,0462 people aged 16 to 25 claiming Jobseekers Allowance. Of these 20,046, there were 1,849 in the Foyle assembly area.”

Given there were 16,710 people aged between 15 and 25 in Londonderry in 2009 according to official statistics at least 11 per cent are jobless.
