1 in 7 young deaths due to suicide

ONE in seven deaths of people under 45 in Londonderry last year were registered as suicides, it has been revealed.

Fourteen per cent of the registered deaths of young people in the first three quarters of 2011 were due to suicide.

Finance and Personnel Minister Sammy Wilson revealed the percentage of registered deaths of people aged under 45 due to “suicide and self-inflicted injury” or “undetermined injury whether accidentally or purposefully inflicted.”

The percentage of total deaths (all ages) attributed to suicide in Londonderry was 2.1 per cent.

The proportion of male deaths by suicide (2.3 per cent) was higher than that for females (1.9 per cent).

And the percentage of people aged over 45 (1 per cent) to have died by suicide was lowest of all.

The Minister outlined the figures in response to an Assembly Question.
