100-mile trek for colleagues

TWO colleagues from Tesco are putting their best foot forward for charity later in the year, and have launched a series of events to help raise their £5,000.

Deborah Harkens and Christine Healy, who will trek the 100 miles between Milngarie and Fort William in September, have appealed for people in Londonderry to support their endeavours by either sponsoring them or making a donation so that they can raise money in aid of Cancer Research UK.

“We are doing the West Highland Way Walk in Scotland in September,” said Deborah.

“It is in aid of the Tesco charity of the Year, which is Cancer Research UK. We are starting training now and we have 12 weeks until the walk,” she said, adding: “We are very excited about it and we are looking forward to taking part, the challenge and the whole historic aspect of the walk. I have never done anything like this before but I have always wanted to do a proper organised walk, so I am looking forward to the chance and to the challenge.”

Her walking partner, Christine, meanwhile, appealed for family, friends and colleagues to rally round and support them.

“We have already done a fashion show in the City Hotel, two weeks ago, which raised £350, and overall we have to raise £2,500 each,” she said.

“In the coming weeks we are planning a range of activities to raise money, including a sponsored walk, and a car boot sale on Sunday, July 1, at the Vale Centre in Greysteel. We are also holding a table quiz at the end of July and we woudl really love support from everyone we know, and we also have sponsor forms for staff and colleagues, their families and friends. I must say that everyone so far has been very supportive of what we are doing.

“We are also doing a bag pack in store on July 20 and 21, and we have a cake sale planned for the staff canteen for staff and their families, and we are also open to taking donations from anyone who wants to help us raise money for Cancer Research UK,” said Christine.

Anyone who wants to help the intrepid duo can contact them at Tesco on Strand Road.
