10am deadline for bin lorries in town?

LARNE council will consider introducing a bylaw banning town centre waste collections after 10am.

The move follows complaints about bin lorries holding up traffic, prompting depot services sub-committee member, Cllr Drew Niblock, to ask about the frequency and timing of collections on Main Street.

Director of environmental services, Phillip Thompson, explained that in addition to the council, five private waste operators also contribute to the congestion.

There were three Council collections each week and usually in the morning.

It was resolved, on the proposal of Ald Roy Beggs, seconded by Cllr Niblock, that the council should consider creating a bylaw to control times when trade waste collection can take place, “for example, before 10am”, subject to officers checking if the council is empowered to do so.
