MORE children in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) claim free school meals than anywhere else in Northern Ireland, it’s been revealed.

A total of 13,620 pupils in primary and secondary schools in the west were taking free school meals according to the 2011 School Meals Census.

WELB had 8,211 primary school pupils in receipt of free food, whilst it had 5,409 secondary schools taking the benefits.

The figures were provided by the Education Minister in response to an Assembly Question.
