1,401 out of work locally

The number of people registering as out of work in Ballymena saw a slight increase in January, up 53 claimants, the latest statistics show.

According to the latest statistics from the Department of Enterprise, the claimant count in the borough now stands at 1,401 compared to 1,348 in December.

Wards within the borough registering the most claimant counts for unemployment in January were Ballee and Dunclug both with 110 claimants - up by two and 16 respectively; Castle Demesne with 102 (down two from December) and Ballykeel down one from December to 100 claimants in January.

The local ward with the lowest number of January claimants was Ballyloughan with 21 (18 in January).

Province-wide, the number of people claiming unemployment benefits fell by 1,700 over the past month.

The figure for January in Northern Ireland stands at 48,200.
