14th jazz festival is hailed a success

The 14th annual City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival has ended on yet another high note with music lovers thronging the banks of the Foyle during the May Bank Holiday weekend for a fabulous feast of rhythm, blues and brass.

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Elisha McCallion said: “There was simply no better place to be over the weekend and the atmosphere in the city was electric from start to finish. Bars, hotels, restaurants, theatres and shopping centres were packed to the rafters over the course of the five day event.

“It’s been fantastic to see so many visitors flocking to the city to soak up the Jazz Festival’s distinctive atmosphere and hospitality together with the Jazz enthusiasts from our own city and district.

“The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival is one of the most popular and eagerly awaited festivals in our events calendar and, we’re also really proud to say that it has become one of the leading Jazz festivals in the country.”

Karan Leonard, Festivals and Events Manager with Derry City and Strabane District Council, said: “It’s been another wonderful festival and we’ve been delighted yet again to attract Jazz artists of the highest calibre.

“It’s hugely important that we all continue to support this type of festival which plays such a vital role in boosting our local economy by attracting business and investment to the city and district.
