15 faulty vehicles detected in Mid Ulster operation

Five drivers, meanwhile, had their vehicle test certificates taken from them by police, and one vehicle was found to have broken brake pipes following a test at Cookstown MOT Centre.

Officers also carried out a large number of preliminary breath tests, and eight vehicles were detected for having rebated fuel.

Constable Billy Dempsey, who was involved in the operation, which also detected eight cases of excess speed, said:

“This operation is about safety and saving lives. We will enforce the law and are determined to make Northern Ireland’s roads safer, but our role is very much secondary.

“All road users have a role to play in preventing deaths and injuries on our roads. All we ask is that drivers slow down, do not drive after drinking or taking drugs, wear a seatbelt and drive with greater care and attention.

“Police will be carrying out more proactive checks in the weeks coming up to Christmas.”
