155 drugs seizures

DRUGS and drugs paraphernalia accounted for 155 confiscations in HMP Magilligan over 2009/10.

Almost 596 items were seized from prisoners held in the County Londonderry jail over the two years.

Drugs/tablets accounted for 106 seizures; drug related items accounted for 20 seizures; and improvised smoking devices accounted for 29 raids.

Mobile phones or chargers were found during 96 searches whilst blades/knives (23) and booze (21) were also confiscated.

Other confiscations included four inappropriate posters/materials and eight items of make-up/toiletries.

The figures relate to the number of finds rather than the quantity of items confiscated.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) released details of the unapproved items in response to a Freedom of Information request.

They were recovered through a variety of methods, most of which resulted from either random or intelligence based searches.
