179 pupils left disappointed by their first choice school

ONE hundred and seventy-nine pupils in Londonderry were disappointed this year after being refused admission to their first choice school.

Lumen Christi refused the largest number of pupils with 57 not gaining admission to the Bishop Street grammar school despite having designated it their first choice.

Londonderry's Catholic girls schools also recorded a high refusal rate with St Cecilia's college rejecting 36 pupils; St Mary's College rejecting 31 pupils; and Thornhill College rejecting 24.

Elsewhere Oakgrove Integrated College refused 10; Foyle and Londonderry College refused 6; and St Joseph's Boy' School refused 5. Only one Primary School refused pupils in the city. Two pupils were not admitted to Culmore Primary School.

Education Minister Caitrona Ruane outlined the information in response to a query at the Stormont Assembly.
