18 people took own lives

EIGHTEEN people took their own lives in Londonderry last year - the highest number of suicides outside Belfast.

The suicide rate here dipped marginally, however, from 20 deaths in 2008 and was lower than the recent peak of 28 in 2006.

The Minister of Finance and Personnel Sammy Wilson detailed the number of deaths recorded as suicide here in each of the last five years in response to a query at the Stormont Assembly.

The figures relate to the number of deaths registered due to "suicide and self-inflicted injury" and due to "undetermined injury whether accidentally or purposefully inflicted."

The figures showed that in Limavady eight people took their own lives in 2009 whilst in Strabane six deaths were registered.
