A former Mayor of Londonderry, Alderman William Hay, has called on Protestant groups “to get up off their backsides” or risk losing out on European and US money, which is set to pour into the province as part of the “peace dividend.” Alderman William Hay said: “It is not seen as the Protestant style to go out with the begging bowl, but the time is coming when they will have to re-examine that style.”

Gay festival organisers rejected criticism from politicians and churchmen: The organisers of the forthcoming Gay Pride Festival in Londonderry have described criticism of the event by political and church leaders as “disturbing and disgraceful.” The organisers said that gay men and lesbians in the city had for many years been isolated, misunderstood and discriminated against.
